About the Process

Landscape Architecture is a design profession that deals with arrangements of outdoor spaces and how people engage and use the space. This involves a broad variety of site needs, influences and conditions. As a site design professional we use a creative problem solving process to deal with these site issues and to construct a successful design. Often this is a complex process; trying to balance the site’s natural opportunities and constraints with the program needs of the client. The design process can become a real puzzle, with a multitude of pieces, affecting the completed design. How the puzzle is put together requires creativity, knowledge, and experience. The goal is to fit the pieces together into unified, functional, and attractive design that respects the environment and meets the needs of the client.

Project Stages

We commonly follow through four stages of site design and construction; Preliminary Design/ Regulatory Approvals, Design Development, Contract Documents and Contract Administration.

In the Preliminary Design / Approval stage the existing conditions are studied along with the regulatory requirements required for the specific site activity. This is where the various opportunities and constraint pieces of the puzzle are put together in a design.

In Design Development the puzzle pieces are often rearranged and prioritized, alternatives are explored, and a unified final plan is developed.

After a final design is accepted, the project moves into the Contract Document phase, where details and specifications are defined, to show how this puzzle will fit together.

The final stage, Contract Administration, is the stage where professional guidance helps with the client,  contractor, and regulatory communication. The Landscape Architect is there to resolve unexpected site design issues track schedules, and budgets, and observe that the project follows the specified contract documents.

Our goal is to complete a project with the proper protections, preservation, and enhancement of a site, its natural resources, and the surrounding environment.  In the end it is to the satisfaction of all parties involved.
